Paws for Purple Hearts

Veteran Recovery Through Canine Care

Paws for Purple Hearts is a pioneering nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of wounded Service Members and Veterans through innovative canine-assisted therapy and service dog training. Established in 2006 as a research initiative at the prestigious Bergin College of Canine Studies in partnership with the Menlo Park Veterans Administration Medical Center, the program has since grown into an independent 501(c)(3) organization making a national impact.

Our Mission
Our mission is to help Warriors overcome the visible and invisible wounds of military service through the healing power of dogs. Paws for Purple Hearts is the first organization to offer Canine-Assisted Warrior Therapy®, a groundbreaking program that allows Service Members and Veterans to actively participate in training service dogs for their fellow Warriors. This unique approach not only prepares high-quality assistance dogs but also promotes recovery, purpose, and connection for those involved in the training process.

Our Roots
Paws for Purple Hearts remains deeply connected to Bergin College of Canine Studies, the world’s first and only academic institution focused entirely on canine studies. Founded and led by Dr. Bonnie Bergin—the originator of the service dog concept—the college continues to advance research and education in human-canine partnerships. All Paws for Purple Hearts trainers are proud Bergin College graduates, upholding the highest standards in service dog training and care.

Why It Matters
Through its dedication to excellence in canine-assisted therapy, Paws for Purple Hearts empowers Veterans to rebuild confidence, independence, and emotional well-being. Each trained service dog represents more than support—it symbolizes healing, hope, and the powerful bond between people and dogs.
