Ford Transmission Defect

Ford Transmission Defect and Rollaway Accident Lawsuits

Carabin Law is investigating claims involving defective Ford transmissions that may place drivers, passengers, and pedestrians at serious risk. Federal safety records indicate that certain Ford vehicles contain a faulty shifter cable bushing that can degrade or detach, preventing the vehicle from shifting into the intended gear.

When this defect occurs, a driver may believe the vehicle is safely in “park,” when it is not. The result can be a sudden rollaway incident, increasing the risk of collisions, crushing injuries, and fatalities—often with no warning.

What Went Wrong with Ford’s Transmission System

According to documentation submitted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the problem involves a bushing that connects the shifter cable to the transmission. Over time, this component may wear down or separate entirely.

When the bushing fails:

  • The shifter may not match the actual gear position

  • The vehicle may move even after being placed in “park”

  • Drivers may be unable to prevent the vehicle from rolling

  • Bystanders and occupants face serious danger

Ford has acknowledged awareness of the issue, citing more than 1,600 warranty claims and over 230 consumer complaints tied to the defect.

Reported Injuries and Damage

Ford has also reported being aware of multiple incidents connected to the transmission failure, including:

  • At least four reported injuries

  • Six known property damage claims

  • Numerous near-miss rollaway events

Because rollaway accidents often occur when no one is behind the wheel, injuries can be especially severe and unexpected.

Understanding Rollaway Accidents

Rollaway accidents are especially dangerous because they often occur without a driver present. The vehicle is assumed to be secure, leaving no opportunity to react or stop it once it begins to move.

Common injuries associated with rollaway incidents include:

  • Crushing injuries
  • Broken bones and fractures
  • Head, neck, and spinal injuries
  • Internal organ damage
  • Paralysis
  • Fatal injuries

Children, elderly individuals, and pedestrians are particularly vulnerable in these incidents.

Ford Vehicles Included in the Transmission Recall

The transmission defect has been linked to several Ford models and model years, including:

  • 2013-2019 Ford Escape

  • 2013-2018 Ford C-Max

  • 2013-2016 Ford Fusion

  • 2015-2018 Ford Edge

  • 2013-2021 Ford Transit Connect

Ford Escapes account for approximately 1.7 million vehicles affected by the recall. Additional vehicles or model years may be added as investigations continue.

Drivers who are unsure whether their vehicle is impacted should check official recall databases or seek legal guidance.
