Exactech Recall

Knee Replacement Recall Lawsuit

Exactech has issued a nationwide recall involving more than 147,000 knee replacement implants already placed in patients across the United States. The recall stems from reports that key plastic components inside the implants may break down far earlier than expected, leading to painful complications, implant failure, and the need for corrective surgery.

At Carabin Law, our mass tort attorneys are actively reviewing claims for patients harmed by recalled Exactech knee and ankle replacement devices.

Recalled Knee Replacement Systems

The recall covers knee replacement systems sold under the OPTETRAK and TRULIANT names, along with certain Exactech ankle replacement parts.

These implants use plastic inserts made of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE). The inserts sit between metal parts and help the joint move smoothly. Exactech reports that faulty packaging allowed too much oxygen to reach the inserts, causing the plastic to break down too early.

In a February 7, 2022 Urgent Medical Device Correction notice, Exactech acknowledged that packaging used since 2004 did not properly protect the inserts. Because of this issue, tens of thousands of patients may experience implant failure much sooner than expected.
