Elmiron Lawsuits

Vision Loss Linked to Interstitial Cystitis Drug

Elmiron (pentosan polysulfate sodium) is a prescription drug used to treat bladder pain caused by interstitial cystitis (IC). The medication is designed to help protect the bladder lining and reduce chronic pain and discomfort.

However, lawsuits now allege that long-term use of Elmiron can cause a rare and permanent eye condition that leads to vision loss.

Elmiron and Vision Damage Claims

Patients who took Elmiron for extended periods report developing a form of macular degeneration known as pigmentary maculopathy. This condition affects the retina and can worsen over time, even after stopping the drug.

Reported vision problems include:

  • Blurred or distorted vision
  • Difficulty reading or seeing fine detail
  • Dark spots in the field of vision
  • Trouble seeing in low light
  • Faded or muted colors
  • Curved or warped lines

Medical studies suggest the drug may build up in retinal cells, causing damage to the part of the eye responsible for central vision.

Lawsuits

Hundreds of injured patients have filed lawsuits against Janssen Pharmaceuticals, the maker of Elmiron. These cases have been consolidated into a federal multidistrict litigation (MDL No. 2973) in New Jersey.

The lawsuits claim the manufacturer failed to warn doctors and patients about the risk of serious eye damage, even though early data showed vision-related side effects.

The litigation is ongoing and includes extensive discovery. Bellwether trials may be used to help determine future outcomes.
