Document, Document, Document

  1. If you’re physically able, here are important steps to follow after a crash to ensure that you have all the essential information:

    1. Exchange Information
      • Details to Share: Exchange names, contact details, and insurance information with all parties involved.
      • Documentation: Photograph all necessary documents, such as license plates, driver’s licenses, any tickets the other driver received if they were at fault, the badge numbers of law enforcement officers on scene, and if possible, the people involved in the accident. Anything and everything can be useful to support your claims going forward.
      • Photos and Videos: Take numerous photos and videos of everything related to the accident. This includes:
        • Vehicles: Capture images of all vehicles involved from various angles. Take both close-up shots and photos from a distance.
        • Condition: Document the inside and outside of each vehicle.
      • Before Moving: If possible, take photos and videos before the vehicles are moved.
      • Additional Locations: If your car or the other car is moved to an impound lot, take pictures there too.
    2. Document the Area
      • Exact Time: Take videos and videos of the area where the accident happened at the same time of day it occurred. This can be crucial for lighting and visibility evidence.
    3. Get Help If Needed
      • Can’t Do It Yourself?: If you’re unable to gather this information, ask a loved one to help. Ensure they document everything as you would: the vehicles, the scene, and any relevant locations.
    4. Seek Medical Attention
      • Don’t Ignore Hidden Injuries: Even if you feel fine right after the crash, it’s crucial to see a doctor. Some injuries may not show symptoms immediately but can be serious. Early medical evaluation can help identify and treat these issues before they become more severe.

    CAUTION

Important Word of Caution: Be aware of case runners who may show up at your door, attempting to recommend attorneys. This kind of conduct is illegal, and they are not acting out of the goodness of their hearts. They may persistently call you, show up uninvited, and sometimes even offer you money for your case. Always question the motives behind any attorney or service they suggest. If you encounter this situation, report it to the State Bar of Texas immediately. To file a complaint against an attorney please visit cdc.texasbar.com or call 1-800-932-1900.
