Camp Lejeune Toxic Water

Fighting for Marines, Families & Civilians Exposed to Contaminated Water

For more than 30 years, service members and families living or working at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune were unknowingly exposed to some of the most toxic chemicals ever found in a U.S. water system. Between 1953 and 1987, the base’s water supply contained solvents, degreasers, fuels, and carcinogens at levels thousands of times higher than federal safety limits.

The Camp Lejeune Justice Act of 2022 now allows victims to bypass previous legal barriers and file claims for the illnesses, cancers, and birth defects linked to the contaminated water.

Carabin Law is actively representing individuals and families impacted by Camp Lejeune’s toxic exposure.

What Contaminated the Water at Camp Lejeune?

Investigations have confirmed that Camp Lejeune’s water contained over 70 hazardous chemicals, including several known human carcinogens. Some were traced to leaking fuel tanks, while others originated from a nearby dry-cleaning facility.

Key toxic compounds included:

  • TCE (Trichloroethylene): solvent used for degreasing metal equipment
  • PCE (Perchloroethylene): dry-cleaning chemical linked to cancer and organ damage
  • Benzene: petroleum-based chemical linked to leukemia
  • Vinyl Chloride: created when TCE and PCE break down in groundwater

Levels of these chemicals were recorded at up to 3,400 times the legal safety limit—yet the contamination went unaddressed for years.

Illnesses and Conditions Linked to Camp Lejeune Contamination

Exposure to these toxins has been linked to devastating, long-term health problems for Marines, their families, and civilian workers.

Cancers
  • Bladder, kidney, and liver cancer

  • Leukemia and lymphoma

  • Multiple myeloma

  • Brain, neck, and respiratory cancers

  • Pancreatic and gastrointestinal cancers

  • Reproductive cancers

  • Parkinson’s disease

  • ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease)

  • Aplastic anemia and other bone marrow disorders

  • Scleroderma

  • Renal toxicity

  • Pulmonary fibrosis

  • Chronic bronchitis and lung disease

  • Cardiac and neural defects

  • Brain injuries

  • Developmental delays

  • Miscarriage and fetal loss

Thousands of people stationed at the base have reported these illnesses—many only learning decades later about the toxic exposure.
