Bard Kugel Hernia Mesh Lawsuit

Complications, Recalls & Legal Help

The Bard Composix Kugel Mesh patch, designed for ventral hernia repair, was introduced as a medical solution intended to support weakened tissue. However, after larger models of the device entered the market in the early 2000s, patients and surgeons began reporting dangerous failures linked to the mesh and its internal recoil ring.

These complications triggered multiple FDA alerts, safety warnings, and nationwide recalls, ultimately leading to thousands of lawsuits involving severe injuries and even fatalities.

If you or a loved one experienced complications after receiving a Bard Kugel Mesh implant, Carabin Law is here to help you explore your legal options and pursue compensation.

Why the Bard Kugel Mesh Patch Became a Safety Concern

Although the device first received FDA clearance in 1996, significant problems were not widely reported until the manufacturer expanded its product line. The larger patches introduced around 2002 had a higher risk of mechanical failure, especially involving the memory recoil ring meant to help the mesh keep its shape.

When this ring broke or malfunctioned, patients suffered severe internal injuries, including:

  • Bowel perforation

  • Bowel obstruction

  • Chronic abdominal pain

  • Severe or recurring infections

  • Mesh migration or tearing

  • Life-threatening complications

These injuries often required additional surgeries and, in some cases, resulted in long-term health damage or death.

FDA Recalls and Safety Actions

Thousands of lawsuits were eventually consolidated in a federal multidistrict litigation (MDL), and the manufacturer agreed to a major settlement for injured patients.

Key Recall History

  • 2005 – Class I Recall Issued
The FDA announced a Class I recall for specific Bard Composix Kugel Mesh X-Large Oval patches after reports of recoil ring breakage.

  • 2006 – Recall Expansion
Additional sizes, including Oval, Large Oval, and Large Circle patches, were added after more incidents were reported.

  • 2007 – Further Updates
Davol/Bard expanded the recall again to include additional product codes and manufacturing lots affected by design failures.

These recalls underscore serious defects that placed thousands of patients at risk.
