After a car accident, NEVER give your Social Security number to an insurance company.
Most people assume adjusters need their Social Security number for paperwork or to confirm identity. They don’t.
Insurance companies can process:
- Property damage claims
- Injury claims
- Repair estimates
- Rental car coverage
all without your Social Security number. If they tell you otherwise, it’s usually a tactic, not a requirement.
Your SSN Allows Them to Dig Into Your Private Records
When you hand over your Social Security number, you may be giving the insurance company the tools to search for:
- Past medical treatments
- Old injuries
- Prior claims or lawsuits
- Employment history
They can then use that information against you by arguing:
- Your injuries are pre-existing
- You’ve filed “too many” claims
- You’re not entitled to full compensation
In short, your SSN can become a weapon used to reduce or deny your payout.
So What Should You Do If an Adjuster Asks for Your SSN?
You can politely say:
“I’m not comfortable providing my Social Security number. You don’t need it to process my claim.”
or
“I’ve been advised not to provide my SSN. Please continue the claim without it.”
If you’ve already been asked for your SSN or if an adjuster is pressuring you, call Carabin Law. We’ll step in, protect your rights, and make sure your claim stays safe.
